Womens Season Ends With Loss to USC

The season came to and end last Sunday for the women’s basketball team as they lost 81-40 to the University of South Carolina in the second round of the WNIT Tournament. Hartford failed to reach the NCAA Tournament when they lost 48-46 to UMBC in the Championship game of the America East Tournament in Binghamton, New York.
MaryLynne Schaefer was the only Hawk to score in double figures as se finished the game with 15 points, all from three-point range. It was a different story for South Carolina as all but one player scored in the game. Melanie Johnson had a game-high 18 points on the night including four rebounds. Hartford shot just 24 percent from the floor in the loss while South Carolina shot an impressive 62 percent from the field.
Hartford finishes the season with a 25-9 overall record.
In the first two games of the AE Tournament, Hartford was able to hold off Albany and Binghamton by 10 points in both games. UMBC pulled off the upset which ended Hartford’s chance to three-peat as AE Champions. The Hawks were forced to wait to see whether the NCAA Committee would grant them a birth in the NCAA or the WNIT. Hartford was placed in the WNIT after Montana was granted a bid to the big dance. Before the loss to USC, Hartford beat Bucknell in the first round of the WNIT Tournament, 70-54.
