Tuesday night, President Barack Obama delivered his fifth state of the union address. He spoke about several different topics ranging from national security to health care, including the importance of having health insurance.

Using the story of a single mom who would have gone bankrupt had she not been covered by the Affordable Care Act (popularly called Obamacare), Obama said, “That’s what health insurance reform is all about – the peace of mind that if misfortune strikes, you don’t have to lose everything.”

He used several other personal stories to illustrate his policies from the last year, including that of Cory Remsburg, a soldier injured in Iraq, as he made his point on ending the war in the middle east.

“Cory is here tonight. And like the Army he loves, like the America he serves, Sergeant First Class Cory Remsburg never gives up, and he does not quit.” The recovering soldier was treated to the longest standing ovation of the night.

President Obama also announced that he will begin issuing executive orders, allowing him to pass reforms and other bills without the approval of Congress. And, as predicted, he said that the state of the union is strong.

“Tonight, this chamber speaks with one voice to the people we represent: it is you, our citizens, who make the state of our union strong.”

In the official Republican response to the address, Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, of Washington state, said the President offered more “promises that sound good, but won’t solve the problems actually facing Americans.”
