The Biden administration will no longer enforce masks on public transit
Is it a cause for concern that a new Omicron subvariant is gaining widespread in the United States?
The Biden administration announced on Monday, April 18th, that the mask mandate is no longer in place on public transportation, essentially ending a key White House initiative to combat the spread of COVID-19.
This decision comes after a federal judge in Florida ruled to overturn the requirement for flights, trains, and airports. In response, Many airlines have outright dropped the requirement and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has stated that they will not enforce it, bringing an end to one of America's longest-running mask mandates.
While many individuals rejoiced and welcomed the news by removing their masks in mid-flight, it provoked a wide range of emotions, opinions were split between those who felt they were important for public safety and those who considered them as a needless inconvenience or perhaps even government intrusion.
Following the removal of the mask restriction on public transportation, another Omicron subvariant is gaining traction in the United States, the BA.2.12.1 variant, which currently accounts for one-fifth of COVID-19 cases.
There seems to be a lot of uncertainty about the COVID 19 pandemic's future.
