Open Net: New York Rangers' Goalie Igor Shesterkin Out for Season

By Caroline Kysela2 min read

Rangers fans are not strangers to chaos in regard to the unfolding of every season. Goal scoring and puck handling comes and goes every year, but the beginning of the 2026 season seemed to be foreshadowing a bright future for New York City hockey. Many new faces have joined the roster, including standouts Eeli Tolvanen and Alberts Smits (the youngest Latvian player to make their NHL debut).

Another highlight to watch has been Igor Shesterkin protecting the Rangers goal, with his GAA (Goals Against Average) being 1.79, one of the best in the league. Additionally, Igor scored a goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning on October 1, becoming the first goalie in New York Rangers history to light the lamp.

But the celebration didn't last long; On October 9, Shesterkin got injured during a game against the Washington Capitals. At 8:20 of the second period, Igor jammed his right skate into his goalpost in an attempt to reposition against an attack from the Capitals.

The injury is season-ending for Igor, with the Rangers announcing soon-after that the right-knee injury will require surgery and rehabilitation. With the final score of the game 3-1 in favor of Washington, that evening ended in a loss for the Rangers in multiple ways.

And this change in roster has been difficult for the players on the team as well; Star forward Mika Zibanejad noted at the end of a practice, "Obviously a huge part of our team and unreal teammate. He means so much for us obviously, so that (stinks). It's our friend... It's just a tough situation obviously for us, but mostly for him."

Shesterkin has been a fan favorite on the Blueshirts ever since making his debut in 2020, and has been one of the best goaltenders in the league over his career. He is a three time All-Star, and won the Vezina Trophy in 2022 as the best goalie in the NHL. Igor led the Rangers in deep playoff runs, including the Eastern Conference Finals in 2022 and 2024. The injury is obviously a major blow to the teams playoff aspirations.

Despite the abruptness, the team is rebuilding and looking to continue their success. Goalie Dylan Garand has stepped up to the goalpost for the Rangers, and fans are looking for him to be their savior after such a loss. On the fans responses, Garand states, "I've felt so much support from these fans and it really means a lot to me. I just try to go out there and battle- Not only for the guys in the room but for the fans as well." The effort seems to be showing as well, with Dylan's GAA being 1.15, the second in the league.

A goalie is the backbone of any hockey team, and sudden injury or change can completely reshape the operations and strategies for any team at any time. Fans hope the momentum can continue for the Rangers, and could bring them closer to Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley's Cup at the end of the season.
