Alex Debrincat Signs 7-Year, $91 Million Extension

On Wednesday, the Detroit Red Wings and winger Alex DeBrincat agreed to a 7-year/$91 million extension, with an Average Annual Value (AAV) of $13 million. The contract kicks in this July and runs through the 2033-34 NHL season. DeBrincat will have a no-trade clause for the first 4 years of the contract, that converts to a modified no trade clause for the remainder of the deal.

This is the largest contract in Detroit Red Wings history. DeBrincat signed his current contract July 9, 2023, after being acquired from a divisional rival, Ottawa Senators. DeBrincat’s new extension is his 4th career contract.

Alex DeBrincat is coming off a 41-goal season, with a career-high 85 points. DeBrincat has had a very accomplished career, with 300 goals and 606 points scored in 705 regular season games. So far this season he has 6 goals and 11 points through 9 games. Despite being a consistent top of the lineup contributor throughout his career, the Michigan native has not seen any real playoff success, only playing in the bubble back in 2020. Since starting out with the Chicago Blackhawks, DeBrincat has played with 3 different NHL teams.

Alex DeBrincat was selected 39th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, dropping primarily due to his lack of size. DeBrincat has the second-most goals, just behind Auston Matthews, the top pick. He is also 4th in points.

Detroit Red Wings Interim General Manager, Shawn Horcoff, praised Alex DeBrincat for his work ethic, skills, and leadership. "The effort is there, the intensity is there and the competitiveness is there...he plays much bigger than his size (5'8")...Alex brings much more than goal scoring and offense to our team. It's the leadership, it's the example he sets". Red Wings star defender Moritz Seider said, “He’s proven every single year that he’s a vital asset to our team,” “He’s taking more and more steps in the locker room too, and he’s going to continue making big plays for us”, Seider added. "I'm so proud to be a Red Wing and put on that jersey every night...I really believe in what we are trying to build here...I'm a Detroit Red Wing at heart", said DeBrincat.
