Disney cruise ship aids Coast Guard rescue

Disney Treasure helps save stranded boaters

Sunday, November 10th, at approximately 11:40 AM, off the coast of Bermuda, a boat sent a distress call, as it had begun to take in water. The U.S. Coast Guard sent out a call for any ships in the area to assist. What was unexpected is what ship actually responded to that call.

The Disney Treasure, a newly built cruise ship not yet officially in service, was in the area on its way to Port Canaveral, Florida for its maiden voyage in December. It arrived alongside the Coast Guard to assist. It was about 80 miles away, and arrived within two hours. They worked with the Coast Guard to rescue four people from the sinking ship.

Marco Nogara, captain of the Disney Treasure, told a CNN affiliate that “Our crew members worked together on the rescue, skillfully demonstrating their training and commitment to safety.” (CNN)

According to the Associated Press, the water entering the boat came in through an escape hatch that had blown a gasket.
