This Summer was perhaps the best and wildest Transfer Window of all time, multiple record deals, thieving players from other clubs, what is Palace doing?
First things first, Liverpool made not one but two record deals. The first was for Florian Writz, the German star who came over from Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool paid 116.5 million Euros for Writz. He has gotten off to a shaky start, but he should be a force at the number 10 for the Reds.
There were a lot, and I mean a lot, of talks about Alexander Isak leaving Newcastle. Finally, the saga ended when Newcastle and Liverpool agreed to an English Transfer record fee of 170 million Euros. Isak was the best Striker in world last year, the 25-year-old netted 23 goals in 33 games and he now joins a Liverpool front line, who did sell Luis Diaz to Bayern and Darwin Nunez to Al-Hilal.
Not to mention the signing of Hugo Ekitike who the Reds bought for 77 million Euros from Frankfurt. Ekitike had a great start for Liverpool which questioned whether or not they need Isak, but they bought him anyway, so Liverpool have a deadly backup as well as Isak. Liverpool will now have a Front four of Isak, Salah, Gakpo, and Writz, the champions got a whole lot better.
Manchester United finished 17th last season and lost to Spurs in the Europa league final. United brought in three major signings, bringing in Matheus Cunha from Wolves for 62.5 Millon, Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford for 71 million, and Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig for 77 million. United still lost to Grimbsy Town in the Carabo cup.
Chelsea and Arsenal made notable signings to beef up their attacks. Arsenal brought in Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres two of the best attackers that were on the market. Chelsea was a lot less quiet notably adding Joao Pedro who was been a beast as Pedro has been scoring goals for fun. Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, and Estevao were the other big moves made by the Blues. Chelsea returns to the Champions League after a three-year absence after the Blues finished fourth and by winning the Club World Cup and Conference League last season.
Manchester City signed Gianluigi Donnarumma who made quite the scene as he left PSG. He joins City who currently sit 13th in the Premier League and in desperate need of a Goalkeeper. Donnarumma has been the highest rated goalkeeper in the world over the last two seasons, winning the Champions League with PSG and becoming a Euros Champion with Italy in his breakout year in 2021. The 26-year-old had a bit of a harsh exit with PSG but he should thrive in Manchester, and I just know Pep is licking his chops with the idea of having him in goal.
Sunderland
Sunderland made some huge moves most notably signing Granit Xhaka to bolster the midfield and adding Habib Diarra. Sunderland also agreed to loan Chelsea’s Marc Guiu, a young and promising striker, but due to Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson situation and Liam Delap going down with injury and being out for 2 months, Guiu has been recalled by Chelsea. Sunderland aim to be the first Championship side in three seasons to at least stay up for a season after being promoted.
Key Window Trends –
- Clubs spent heavily on stars already acclimatized to English football, like Eze, Mbeumo, and João Pedro, and Delap.
- Nine of the ten biggest deals were forward players, showing clubs are prioritizing goals above all.
- Between Liverpool and United, the two clubs accounted for seven of the top ten signings, highlighting a new arms race at the top of the table.
Currently it is the first international break so Isak and Donnarumma are the two big names to not make debuts yet. The Premier League is back in action this weekend.
