Robot Transformation in China

Robots are transforming Chinese architecture.

Philip Yuan, founder of the firm Archi-Union Architects, is exploring new approaches to the construction of China involving the use of fabrication and robotics. This method would offer a new way to produce sophisticated buildings in a shorter time frame.

“In Bamboo” is a wooden pavilion conceived in collaboration with bamboo weavers. The design of this project is distinctive, complex, and only made through cutting-edge technology. The completion of this building took 52 days as opposed to a year or two if using traditional building methods.

Yuan states “Although the material (brick) is traditional, we can organize the form into something new. It’s a collaboration between human and machine. I can teach the robotics, and it can place it precisely.”
