Mission Impossible 8: The Final Reckoning, was revealed as the title, alongside a trailer for the action spy film, starring Tom Cruise.
The film Description: “In “Dead Reckoning,” Cruise’s Ethan Hunt finds himself up against a dangerous AI program called The Entity that seems to predict his every move and could cause disaster if it falls into the wrong hands. After escaping a calamitous train crash in the ending of the movie, Ethan realizes The Entity is stashed aboard an old Russian submarine, but a foe from Ethan’s past named Gabriel (Esai Morales) is also on the trail” (Variety).
This is the 62 year-old’s, 8th and final time returning as Ethan Hunt, as he first took up the role in 1996, where the film would earn $457.7 million, at the box office, beating out twister in the opening weekend.
The previous film Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, which released last year on July 12, 2023, made $570.6 million at the box office, and was rated 96% at rotten tomatoes. Showing that the Oscar nominee still has it.
The trailer is packed with action scenes, as, “Cruise scuba dives and explores a wrecked submarine, flies and falls out of a biplane and does a lot of running” (Variety).
Cruise is known for performing his own stunts, and this film was no different, as in one of the stunts that is seen in the trailer, shows him hanging on by a thread on the biplane, that was entirely done by Cruise in Oxfordshire, England.
The film features many names ranging from, “Henry Czerny, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff and Vanessa Kirby, Hannah Waddingham, Nick Offerman, Katy O’Brian and Tramell Tillman” (THR). With Christopher McQuarrie set to return as as writer and director for the the fourth time, since he first directed Mission Impossible 5, 6, and 7 which are some of the highest rated in the franchise.
The film faced many set backs as, it was “originally slated to be the “Part Two” to 2023’s “Dead Reckoning” (Variety). Due to the 2020 COVID Pandemic, and SAF–AFTRA strikes, the film was delayed and was pushed back numerous times.
Cruise took to social media to highlight the film stating in the caption, “Every choice has led to this. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” (X).
The film is set to release on May 23, 2025.
