What is BlueSky?

Bye Bye 'X', Hello Bluesky

Bluesky is a social media app, that is reminiscent of ‘twitter’. It has been described as a “decentralized alternative to X, where posting is known as skeeting” (WUSA9).

The blogging app was created in 2019 as part of a project started on Twitter. This project ended up falling through, making Bluesky an independent company in 2021.

Since then, Bluesky has been flying under the radar, gaining a few new users every so often, also getting, “the attention of some ex-tweeters back in 2023, when new users were only able to sign up through an invite system” (Wired). This is no longer the case as users do not need a code to join.

It was not until the election, when Elon Musk, who is the owner of ‘X”, after acquiring the company back in 2022, showed his active support of now presidential elect, Donald Trump. After the election, many people began to say goodbye to the social media platform, as, “More than 115,000 US X users deactivated their accounts the day after the election, the largest single-day exit since Musk assumed control of the platform” (CNN Business), with, “users and brands like The Guardian and Don Lemon continue to announce their departures from the platform” (NBC News), “The Atlantic’s Charlie Warzel, the New York Times’ Mara Gay and former CNN anchor Don Lemon” (CNN Business), also joining the app.

Users began looking for an alternative and that’s when Bluesky, became the leading social media app, gaining, “over 1.25 million new users in the past week” (CNBC). The social media app remains under its rivals, as, “The Seattle startup claims 15.2 million total users. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in October said Threads had nearly 275 million monthly users. Musk in May claimed that X had 600 million monthly users, but market intelligence firm Sensor Tower pegged X’s monthly base at 318 million users in October” (CNBC).
Bluesky took the No.1 spot in the US chart on the Apple App Store, Doubling its users, as the company brought, “more than 15 million total users [in]” (CNN Business).
Blue Sky is open and free to the public, with the app gearing up to stay at that number 1 spot.
