Chicago Bears Fire Matt Eberflus

Eberflus's playcalling was called into question following an embarrassing loss to Detroit

The Chicago Bears have fired head coach Matt Eberflus after two-plus seasons as head coach. The decision comes just one day after Ebeflus’s coaching ability was called into question once again, following the Bears 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions.

With 36 seconds left on the clock and the Bears nearing field goal range, Eberflus decided against using the Bears’ final time out despite quarterback Caleb Williams being sacked. The decision allowed for 30 seconds to run off the clock before the Bears failed to complete a “Hail Mary” attempt. Eberflus spoke candidly about the decision to not use the timeout, saying “We’re at 36 seconds right there and our hope was, because it was third [down] going into fourth [down], that we would rerack that play at 18 seconds, throw it inbounds, get it in field goal range and then call a timeout” (ESPN).

With the loss, the Bears fell to 4-8 on the season, despite having a talented offense led by rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and veteran wide receivers DJ Moore and Keenan Allen. Eberflus’s time in Chicago is over. He finishes his time as the Bears head coach with a record of 14-32. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, this is the first time in the history of the Chicago Bears that the team has made a coaching change in the middle of the season. (Schefter on X)
