Commanders Release 2023 First Round Pick Emmanuel Forbes Jr.

The Washington Commanders have released former first round pick, cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr.

Forbes was selected 16th overall in the 2023 Draft by Washington after an impressive college career at Mississippi State. The lockdown corner has the most “pick-sixes” in FBS history with 6, and Ron Rivera hoped that his skills as a defender would translate in the NFL. However, the Mississippi State product struggled in his rookie season with injuries and poor performance, allowing a 65% completion rate, with 39 receptions allowed for over 600 yards. With the Commanders having parted ways with Ron Rivera in favor of Dan Quinn in 2024, Forbes was hoping for a fresh start behind the defensive-minded coach.

However, Forbes often found himself on the sidelines in 2024, dealing with injuries before being demoted from his starting role after suffering an injury, and never found his way back into the Commanders lineup. Forbes had been a healthy scratch over the last few weeks and now finds himself a free agent.

For Washington, Forbes is another failed first round draft pick, as all four of the Commanders first round picks from the Ron Rivera era are now playing elsewhere.
