Debbie Nelson, the mother of legendary rapper Eminem, has passed away at the age of 69. The news was confirmed by a representative of Eminem’s.
Nelson was said to have died on Monday, December 2, as the cause of death was unknown at first, but then it was said that Nelson had died from, “complications related to lung cancer” (PEOPLE).
It was reported three months ago that, Nelson had been diagnosed with lung cancer as a source had reported, “There are not many options [for Debbie]…She is currently staying between the cancer center and with family members. She has a very limited amount of time [left]” (In Touch Weekly). It is said that Eminem had been taken care of his mother financially but had still not spoken to his mother for years.
Eminem and his mother have been estranged for a long time, dating back to the rapper’s younger days, where Eminem stated in a story back in 1999, “He accused her of stealing his paychecks, frequently kicking him out of the house, and popping pills and taking other drugs, which triggered mood swings. [Nelson denied ever doing drugs.]” (Rolling Stone). The pair were also in a legal battle, Nelson sued her son for $10 million over defamation after Eminem commented about his mother on two of his popular songs, ‘My Name Is’ and ‘Cleanin’ Out My Closet’. Nelson would beat her son in the case, but “reportedly only received $25,000, most of which went to pay legal fees” (Rolling Stone).
Eminem has not held back his words on his mother, even penciling her in his raps, which would see Nelson, “in turn, actually lobbed a diss track of her own at her son. In the early 2000s, a hip-hop group called ID-X asked Nelson (then going by Debbie Mathers-Briggs) if she wanted to put out a CD of her own, and she agreed. One of the resulting two tracks, “Dear Marshall,” found Nelson reciting an open letter to her son, where she alternately chastises her son and admits some mistakes of her own” (Rolling Stone).
Nelson also wrote a tell-all book on her son called My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem, where she would talk about Eminem’s childhood and how they have been apart for a long time. The two would express wanting to reconcile, “In 2013 when the rapper released “Headlights,” fans speculated that it was his apologizing to Nelson. “And I’m mad I didn’t get the chance to thank you for being my mom and my dad,” he sings in one part of the song. “So Mom, please accept this as a tribute I wrote on this jet” (PEOPLE).

There had been no news on if the two had reconciled or had been in contact with each other, with the only recent news being, Nelson congratulating her son for being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
At the time of this writing, Eminem has yet to respond to the passing of his mother.
