Shortstop Willy Adames has signed a 7 year, $182 million contract with the San Francisco Giants.
Adames, 29, Spent the last 3.5 seasons of his career as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers. The shortstop out of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic was a highly touted prospect for Tampa Bay Rays and showed promise in his first full season for Tampa in 2019, batting .254 with 20 Home Runs and 52 runs batted in. However, injuries, other prospects rising up the Rays farm system, and trouble seeing the ball at Tropicana Field made him a valuable trade piece for Tampa in 2021.
His landing spot was in Milwaukee, where he replicated his breakout 29 campaign, playing in 99 games and hitting 20 home runs and 58 RBIs. In his first full season with the Brewers, Adames hit 30 home runs for the first time in his career, living up to the promise he had as a top prospect in Tampa Bay. Willy Adames had a career year in a contract year, hitting .251 in 2024 and setting career highs in home runs (31), runs batted in (112), and walks (74).
The San Francisco Giants signing of Adames solidifies the left side of their infield for the foreseeable future, as Adames will line up defensively next to third basemen and five time gold glove winner Matt Chapman. Moreover, the move allows the Giants to better their offensive production, as San Francisco finished with a collective .239 batting average (20th in MLB), a .396 slugging percentage (15th in MLB), and 177 Home Runs (T-16th).
