On Monday Night the Finalists for the Heisman trophy was announced, Oregon QB Dillon Gabreil, Miami QB Cam Ward, Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty, and Colorado ATH Travis Hunter. Right now, it’s a two-man race between Jeanty and Hunter.
Ashton Jeanty, RB, Boise State.
Jeanty has rushed for 2497 yards and 27 touchdowns. To compare that to other running backs that have won the Heisman, Derrick Henry was the last to do it and he only had 1986 yards and 23 touchdowns. And not to mention that Jeanty is 132 yards away from breaking Barry Sanders single season rushing record, which has stood for 36 years. The first two weeks of the year Jeanty had instantly put the country on notice by scoring 6 touchdowns and rushing for 257 yards. The following week against the Number one team in the country Oregon Jeanty would rush for 192 and 3 touchdowns. Jeanty looks to become the first running back since Derrick Henry to win the Heisman.
Travis Hunter, ATH, Colorado
The two-way phenom, has 92 catches for 1152 yards and 14 TDs. Defensively, he has 31 tackles and 4 interceptions and 11 pass breakups. Hunter has been the best player on Colorado by far this year and he’s been playing about 100 snaps of football each game. The last chance he had to make his Heisman case he certainly made it, against Oklahoma State Hunter had 10 catches for 116 yards and 3 touchdowns with an interception. He has a lot of injury concerns especially for playing so many snaps. He did have a few rough games especially against Kansas State and Arizona in both games combined he had 5 catches for just 33 yards. Regardless of those games it’s very hard to ignore what he’s done on both sides of the ball this season.
Dillon Gabriel, QB, Oregon
As the QB for the best team in the country obviously he is going to be towards the top of the Heisman leaderboard. To help Oregon get to 13-0 Gabriel has thrown for 3558 yards and 28 TDs with a 73 percent completion percentage and only 6 interceptions with the second best QBR in the nation with a 86.5. Gabreil headlined his season while helping Oregon get to 13-0 and be Big Ten Champs. In their biggest game of the year against Ohio State he had his best game, while throwing for 341 yards 2 TD’s and no interceptions.
Cam Ward, QB, Miami
Miami has the best rated offense in the country and Ward was essentially the entire team with Miami’s defense being so sub-par all season. Ward has the highest QBR in the country with an 88. He’s thrown for 4123 yards and 36 TDs with 7 interceptions and a 67.4 completion percentage. Ward’s seasons was headlined by three 400 yard passing games. His best game came in Miami’s 53-31 win against Duke in which Ward would throw for 400 yards and 5 touchdowns. Even in Miami’s two losses to Syracuse and Georgia Tech, Ward still threw for a combined 697 yards and 5 touchdowns.
The ceremony will be held in New York City on Saturday Night at 8pm.
