Rocky Colavito died peacefully yesterday at the age of 91. Colavito made his MLB debut in 1955 at the age of 22.
Colavito began his career with the Cleveland Indians where he would end up with 8 of his 14 career big league seasons. Among the other teams Colavito played with includes the Detroit Tigers, Kansas City A’s, Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The nine time all star represented the Indians and Tigers four times each while also representing the A’s once. Along with the many all star appearances Colavito also won the Cleveland Baseball Writers Association of America man of the year award in 1958 and 1965.
Colavito also finished first in the American League in 1959 with the most home runs with a total of 42 while ultimately finishing third overall behind Eddie Matthews and Ernie Banks.
Despite never winning a World Series Cleveland fans idolized him during his playing days so much as to fans saying that the trading of Colavito started a curse in Cleveland.
