The Las Vegas Raiders have fired head coach Antonio Pierce after his first full season as the team’s head coach. Pierce finished with an overall record of 9-17 with the team.
During the 2023 season, the Las Vegas Raiders started with a record of 3-5, resulting in head coach Josh McDaniels being shown the door. On Halloween, the team announced that linebackers coach Antonio Pierce would step in as the interim head coach. In the final 9 games of the season, Pierce would lead the Raiders to a 5-4 record, with a notable win against the Los Angeles Chargers, where the Raiders put up a franchise-record 63 points. The end of the season stretch made Pierce the frontrunner for the head coach position for the 2024 season, and the team would hire him as a result.
However, the 2024 season would be one to forget for Pierce, as the Raiders would only win four times over the 17 game stretch, which is less than he did the year before in only 9 games. These results left the team no choice but to fire Pierce.
In a statement from the team, they highlighted Pierce’s leadership during his time as an interim head coach and the head coach. They also noted “we are grateful for his ability to reignite what it means to be a Raider throughout the entire organization.”
Pierce, who grew up a Raiders fan, is a former linebacker who played for the Redskins, and most notably for the Giants during their Super Bowl run in 2008.
The Raiders become the sixth team to fire their head coach during this season, and become third team to fire their coach in as many days.
