January NHL Power Rankings

It is time for another Power Rankings. As always, recency bias and my future expectations are a big part of my criteria. This time the honorable mentions are the Carolina Hurricanes, and the LA Kings.

10-Toronto Maple Leafs(Previously Ranked 4)

On Thursday the Maple Leafs snapped their losing streak with a come back from behind win against the Devils. With Auston Matthews back in the lineup things are looking up for Toronto and I can see them going back to winning games.

9-New Jersey Devils(Previously Ranked 2)

While the Devils have not been awful recently other teams have played far better which warrants this drop from 2-9 for me. They are still a very deep team with plenty of star power and can definitely go on a run and rise in my rankings.

8-Colorado Avalanche(Previously Ranked 8)

The Avalanche have continued their solid play, and I can see them rising a lot by the time of my next rankings because of the high end star power their lineup possesses. Now that they have gotten good goaltending, if they stay healthy I think they are going to do very well.

7-Minnesota Wild(Previously Ranked Honorable Mention(HM))

With Star Forward Kirill Kaprizov and arguably their top 3 defenseman all injured the Wild have managed to tread water recently. All of them except for captain Jared Spurgeon seem to have a good chance of returning in the next week. Once that happens the Wild will have a chance to cement themselves as one of the top teams in the NHL.

6-Florida Panthers(Previously Ranked 5)

While the Panthers have struggled recently they are still looking great to make the playoffs. I am very confident in their ability to step up their play come the playoffs and that is why they remain ranked despite their recent struggles.

5-Winnipeg Jets(Previously Ranked 3)

The Jets have continued their solid play but will continue to take a hit in my rankings because of my concerns on how their game will translate to the playoffs. However their performance this year is nothing to overlook because of how consistently good they have been.

4-Vegas Golden Knights(Previously Ranked 1)

The Golden Knights recent struggles have brought them down to 4 for me. However before that they were doing really well putting themselves in a great spot. I still have a lot of confidence in this team to go on a playoff run.

3-Dallas Stars(Previously HM)

The Stars have arguably been the hottest team since my last power ranking. I have a lot of confidence in this roster. While they miss long-time Star Tyler Seigan, him going on LTIR gives his team cap space to add another star forward or defenseman for a Stanley Cup push.

2-Washington Capitals(Previously Ranked 7)

The Capitals have continued to prove me wrong all season long. They have been very consistent and are currently first place in the NHL. They show no signs of slowing down as they are currently on an 8 game point streak and have not lost a game in regulation so far this month.

1-Edmonton Oilers(Previously Ranked 6)

Since the Oilers bad start they have been playing well, especially recently. Since my last power rankings they have only lost one game. It is hard to bet against a team that has Connor McDavid and Lean Draisaitl and I can see them getting back to the cup finals especially if they add a right shot defenseman before the trade deadline.
