The Seattle Seahawks have been on the precipice of being relevant again for a few years now. They have always had pretty decent seasons with their current core of QB Geno Smith, WR’s DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, and a strong defense anchored by Leonard Williams and the corner duo of Riq Woolin and Devon Witherspoon. Over the last 3 seasons this group has produced a combined record of 28-23. Pretty much as mediocre as it gets. The team has some great pieces, but still just can’t seem to put it all together.
The offense had some great individual performances this season. WR Jackson-Smith Njigba had a breakout sophomore season ending the year with over 1100 receiving yards. Seattle’s running back duo of Zack Charbonett and Kenneth Walker III combined for over 1000 yards, and Geno Smith threw for a career high in yards. Individually the Seahawks seemed great, however as a unit, they were 14th in YPG and 18th in PPG.
The team was 3-6 at home, they were 8th in turnovers, and were 14th in redzone percentage (bottom 10 at home). The Seahawks have some obvious issues. A lot of their problems are self-inflicted. That being said it can be a hard thing to fix. The coaching staff needs to take a hard look in the mirror and ask themselves what they need to do to improve in the turnover battle and the redzone. Beyond that the team needs to add some pieces to help them out.
The team has some key guys they need to bring back like starting EDGE Jarran Reed and starting NT Jonathan Hankins. That may be their biggest priority this offseason as the Seahawks find themselves in a 30 million dollar hole. Their cap is nonexistent and will only get worse with these resignings, if they happen.
That means for the most part the team will have to look toward the draft to add some talent. The Seahawks currently sit at the 18th pick in the NFL Draft. As far as general positioning goes this isn’t a bad pick. However, for the current draft board paired with the Seahawks, the 18th pick is a bit of a nightmare. The team could luck into Georgia S Malakai Starks, or take a shot on Ohio State T Josh Simmons., but honestly the team would probably be better off moving back or trying to climb the order. Sticking and picking isn’t exactly beneficial for the Seahawks, as they should try their hardest to obtain one of this year’s top tackles or Williams. Beyond the first they should look to hunt T value in the second and third and maybe try to add some DL or CB depth in the later rounds.
The Seahawks head into another year where mediocrity is what’s expected and with low cap space and a tough draft spot it will be difficult to turn that around in just one year. The hope is that Seattle can add some solid pieces and the draft and solve some of their issues from the year prior to hopefully make themselves a more serious contender in 2025.
