Los Angeles Angels in 2024: 63-99 (Last in AL West)
General Manager: Perry Minasian (6th Season)
Head Coach: Ron Washington (2nd Season)
As the Los Angeles Angels prepare for the 2025 MLB season, they aim to rebound from a challenging 2024 campaign that concluded with a 63-99 record, marking their ninth consecutive losing season. The organization has been proactive during the offseason, making several key acquisitions to bolster both their lineup and pitching staff.
Offseason Acquisitions
Pitching Enhancements: The Angels have focused on strengthening their pitching rotation by signing left-hander Yusei Kikuchi to a three-year, $63 million contract. Kikuchi, 33, split the previous season between the Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros, finishing with a combined 9-10 record and a 2.70 ERA over his final 10 starts with Houston.
Additionally, the team added veteran right-hander Kyle Hendricks on a one-year, $3 million deal. Hendricks, who spent 11 seasons with the Chicago Cubs, brings experience despite a challenging 2024 season where he posted a 4-12 record and a career-high 5.92 ERA.
Bullpen Reinforcement: In a move to solidify the bullpen, the Angels signed veteran closer Kenley Jansen to a one-year, $10 million contract. Jansen, 37, returns to Southern California after stints with the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves, bringing with him 447 career saves—the most among active pitchers and fourth-most in MLB history.
Offensive Additions: To enhance their lineup, the Angels acquired outfielder Jorge Soler via trade. Soler is expected to serve as the team’s primary designated hitter, adding power to the batting order.
The team also signed catcher Travis d’Arnaud to provide depth behind the plate and mentor young catcher Logan O’Hoppe. Infield versatility was addressed with the signing of Kevin Newman, who is expected to compete for a starting role at multiple positions.
In a bid to revitalize his career, two-time All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson joined the Angels on a minor league deal. Anderson aims to rebound after two challenging seasons and could provide a significant boost if he returns to form.
Prospects to Watch
Second baseman Christian Moore, the Angels’ first-round pick, is progressing rapidly through the minor leagues and could make his MLB debut in 2025. His power-hitting potential makes him a prospect to watch.
Season Outlook
The Angels’ success in the 2025 season will heavily depend on the health and performance of key players like Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon, as well as the effectiveness of their new acquisitions. While the team has made strategic moves to address past weaknesses, the competitive landscape of the American League West presents a significant challenge. A return to playoff contention will require consistent contributions from both veterans and emerging talents throughout the season.
