The tool continues to rise in Kentucky, as widespread flooding destroys the state.
National Weather Service Louisville revealed earlier this week that “Kentucky saw a widespread 3-7 inches of rainfall” (USA Today). With more than a month’s worth of rain flooding large parts of Kentucky, the numbers are continuing to increase. With several citizens missing and the search continuing, it becomes evident how damaging this has become.
“The storm killed at least 14 people – one in severe winds in Georgia, one in West Virginia, and 12 in Kentucky, which took on some of the worst of the devastating flooding in the region” (CNN). Many people were traveling during the floods, “A “significant number” of the deaths in the state were from “people deciding to drive through standing or running water” (CNN), said Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.
This is the most significant natural disaster in the history of Kentucky as “At least 237 people were evacuated by helicopter and boat from two apartment complexes in neighboring Martin County as water levels rose Monday” (CNN). 1,000 water rescues were done during the weekend with the help of FEMA & mutual aid teams.
Kentucky also fell to harsh weather during the week with, Cold temperatures and snow totals upwards of 6-8 inches in some areas is expected to move into the region” (USA Today).
It urged to stay off the roads and call 911 if in life-threatening situations, “People with immediate, non-life threatening needs should call (502) 607-6665 or complete the Rapid Needs Assessment Form online” (USA Today).
