Lee Corso to retire from College Gameday on August 30th

Lee Corso, the face of College Gameday, has been entertaining fans on college football’s premier pregame show since it began in 1987, announced his retirement from ESPN on Thursday morning.

Corso turns 90 in August and will participate in his final show Week 1 of the College Football season. Where the crew will travel to Ohio State vs Texas. Corso is known from putting on a mascot head every fall Saturday morning. He first put a head on, on Gamedays first show, where Corso would put Ohio States Brutus the Buckeye’s mascot head. He has always called Brutus his first love and Brutus will most likely be the first and last mascot head Corso will put on. He has been known over the years for his “not so fast” gimmick towards different celebrity guess pickers over the years. Corso’s love for the Oregon Duck will never go unnoticed, those two have a special bond which lead to Corso riding a motorcycle with the duck last season. Along with all the headgear he has put on, Corso was no stranger to dressing up. He dressed up as the Stanford tree, a leprechaun for Notre Dame, and don’t forget when he dressed up as Benjamin Franklin at James Madison.

Corso had coached at many storied programs, most notably coaching at Florida State, Louisville, and Indiana. He coached for almost 30 years before joining College Gameday as a broadcaster in 1987.

His health became an issue for him in 2009 when he suffered a stroke, but he kept pushing through no matter how healthy he was. Corso said “ESPN has been exceptionally generous to me, especially these past few years. They accommodated me and supported me, as did my colleagues in the early days of College GameDay. Special thanks to Kirk Herbstreit for his friendship and encouragement. And lest I forget, the fans … truly a blessing to share this with them. ESPN gave me this wonderful opportunity and provided me the support to ensure success. I am genuinely grateful.” he said this to ESPN later this morning.

He noted his special relationship with Kirk Herbstreit, whom he sat next to on the show for 29 years. Kirk along with so many others including Rece Davis, the current host of college gameday, Chris Fowler, Desmond Howard and many others posted videos and pictures of Corso on social media to show their love and appreciation for him.

Corso will have one final show on August 30th and that will be it.
