CFB Week 3 Recap

Week 3 of the College Football season was one of the most entertaining we have had so far. Multiple OT games, near upsets, top teams struggling. Let’s get to the best games of the week.

Clemson stunned by Georgia Tech

The Tigers fall to 1-2 after Georgia Tech pulls off the upset with a walk-off 55-yard field goal. Cade Klubnik had two costly turnovers that led to Georgia Tech points. Yellow Jackets QB Haynes King ran the ball more times than he threw it as put up 314 yards of total offense in the win. For Clemson, as they fall to 1-2 after the week 1 loss to LSU Clemson looked shaky against Troy last week before Georgia Tech got the Tigers in the ACC opener. Georgia Tech looked fantastic, the defense was flying around the field, and the offense was spectacular with veteran Haynes King at the helm. Clemson dropped from the AP poll now Dabo and company have a very steep hill to climb.

Georgia Breaks Tennessee Hearts Again

The Dogs beat the Vols for the ninth consecutive season. The last time Tennessee beat Georgia was the last-minute Hail Mary from Josh Dobbs to Juan Jennings in 2016. Early on it looked like Tennessee was going to run away with it as they were out to a 21-7 before Georgia scored 20 unanswered points to take the lead. The Vols offense was stalled before Joey Aguilar launched a prayer that was brought in by Chris Brazzell for a 56-yard touchdown to retake the lead. The teams would trade scores until about two minutes left, knotted up at 38, Joey Aguilar would bring Tennessee down the field with a chance to win it but the kick was pushed right, and we would go to overtime where the Georgia defense made a stand and would score a game winning touchdown. Georgia survived a scare, but Gunnar Stockton really grew up this game he threw for 304 and two touchdowns. Stockton was not the best QB in this game; however, Joey Aguilar was spectacular as he threw for 371 yards and 4 touchdowns. No need to panic for Tennessee, the loss will hurt, but they looked like a real threat in the SEC. Georgia sneaks away with a good win before they welcome Alabama in a few weeks.

Florida goes down again; Lagway throws 5 INT’s

LSU beat Florida 20-10 at the Swamp. Not much to say on this game other than the defensive battle it was. LSU’s defense has looked terrific to start the year forcing DJ Lagway into throwing 5 INT’s and really putting Florida in a tough spot. The Gators play 7 of the top 15 teams in the country at this moment in their last nine games of the season, and regardless of the record, it might the end of Billy Napier era in Ganesville.

Texas A&M with a statement win in South Bend

The Aggies went into South Bend and took down Notre Dame in what might be the game of the year. The Irish fall to 0-2. Marcel Reed and CJ Carr were dealing as Reed threw for 360 and Carr for 293. Notre Dame finally got Jeremiah Love going after he went silent in the Week 1 loss to Miami, Love had 96 yard and a go ahead touchdown with 2:53 remaining. Marcel Reed threw a game winning touchdown pass on fourth and goal and the extra point finished it off for the Aggie win. A chaotic game in South Bend, that was filled with special team touchdown, wild touchdowns, and a missed extra point that cost the Irish the game. Texas A&M takes this win carrying a ton of momentum into SEC play. Notre Dame will need to win out to make the playoff, which did last year, and I would not be surprised if it happened again.

Miami smokes USF

After a huge upset over Florida last week the expectations were high for USF coming into this one, and it seemed like Miami wanted to silence that, especially since USF could have become the first team since Miami in 1987 to start a season beating three straight teams in the AP top 25. The Canes had a dominant 49-12 over USF where Carson Beck threw for 340 yards and three touchdowns. Mark Fletcher Jr added 120 yards on the ground and 2 touchdowns. Miami takes on a depleted Florida team at the swamp next week.

Backyard Brawl Battle

Since Pitt and West Virginia have restored their rivalry it has been a great game every year. Despite Pitt QB Eli Holstien throwing for 300 plus WVU ran the ball down the throats of Pitt as they ran for 171 yards and the Mountaineers had three different QB’s take snaps during the game. Tye Edwards ran for three touchdowns including an OT winner as West Virginia prevailed 31-24.
