Minisota Wild and Kirill Kaprizov Agree to Contract Extension, Making NHL History

The Minnesota Wild and left winger, Kirill Kaprizov have settled on a massive 8 year/$136 million contract extension. The Russian native’s new contract is the biggest in NHL history in both average annual value (AAV) and total value of the contract. Prior to this contract being signed, Lean Draisaitl held the record for the highest AAV with $14 million, which was signed last season and Alex Ovechkin held the record for the highest total value with $124 million, signed in 2008. 

 

The contract will kick in this July after his current one expires. Kaprizov will have a no move claws throughout the whole contract. Kaprizov’s current contract was signed September 21, 2021, after his outstanding rookie season. It was five years and worth $45 Million. The contract included a no move claws for the last two seasons of the contract. 

 

Kaprizov was the 2021 Calder trophy winner. That season he scored 27 goals and 51 points in 55 games. He was voted the Calder Trophy winner by 99 of the 100 voters.  

 

Last season Kaprizov scored 25 goals and 56 points in 41 games. In his career the former 5th round pick has 185 goals and 386 points in 319 regular season games. This averages out to 48-goal and 99-point average per 82 games. Kaprizov has had hart votes in every season of his career except one.
