Connor McDavid Signs Two-Year/$25 Million Contract Extension

On Monday Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers shocked the hockey world, agreeing to a 2 year/$25 million contract extension. The contract kicks in this July and goes through the 2027-28 season. McDavid has a full no move claws throughout the contract.

Many people thought McDavid would get a significantly larger contract. Teammate Lean Draisaitl received $14 Million per season just a year ago and Kirill Kaprizov recently received a record setting $17 million per season.

McDavid’s current contract began in the 2018-19 season. It was an eight-year, $100 million contract. At the time it was the highest average annual value (AAV) in the NHL and was viewed as a massive contract.

With McDavid taking a pay cut, the Oilers had some spare salary cap space. They wasted no time putting it to use, extending defenseman Jake Walman 7 years/$49 million.

Last regular season Connor McDavid scored 26 goals and 100 points in 67 games. In the playoffs he scored 7 goals and 33 points in 22 games. Throughout his career he has 361 goals and 1082 points in 712 regular season games. McDavid has won his fair share of hardware. Five Art Rosses, four Ted Lindsays, three Harts, a Conn Smythe, and a Rocket Richard trophy. He has scored 100 points the past 5 seasons consecutively and 8 of his 10 seasons playing in the NHL. McDavid has played his whole career with the Oilers, who drafted him first overall in the 2015 NHL entry draft. He and the Oilers have made the past two Stanley Cup finals, falling short to the Florida Panthers both times.
