Lane Hutson Signs 8 Year/$70.5 Million Extension

On Monday, the Montreal Canadiens and Lane Hutson agreed to a 8 year/$70.5 million extension. The contract will kick in this July and go through the 2033-34 NHL season. Hutson will have a 10 team no trade clause starting July 2031to the end of his contract.

Hutson is currently 21 years old. When the contract expires, he will be 30 years old and an unrestricted free agent.

Lane Hutson signed his entry level contract on April 24th, 2024. Hutson is now the second highest paid player per year on the Canadiens ($8, 850, 000 AAV). Only Noah Dobson has a greater AAV than him ($9.5 Million).

Lane Hutson is fresh off a Calder trophy campaign. He played all 82 games, scoring 6 goals and 66 points. His 60 assists were enough to tie the all-time assists record for a rookie defenseman. Hutson also finished 9th in Norris trophy voting, receiving 1 3rd place vote, 5 4th place votes, and 22 5th place votes. Hutson is the first defenseman to win the Calder since Mo Seider in 2022. He is also the first rookie to receive Norris Trophy votes since Cale Makar in 2020.

Lane Hutson was selected 62nd overall in the 2022 NHL entry draft by the Montreal Canadiens. Lane Hutson has the third most points out of everyone from his draft class.

Montreal Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes said, “(The goal) has always been to sign Lane (Hutson) long-term in Montreal.”  Hutson’s agent, Sean Coffey spoke on Hutson’s commitment to reach a deal with the Canadiens. “He never wanted to chase every dollar…He loves the fans and his teammates…He didn’t want to become a distraction,” said Coffey. Hutson is happy to be locked up in Montreal long term and is ready to get back to work. “It’s back to work and building my game. I think it’s good for both sides. I’m just happy to be here for a long time.” Hutson added “Every time you get to throw on this jersey, it’s special.”
