On Monday, Penguins Sidney Crosby made history becoming the 9th player in NHL history to reach 1,700 career points. Crosby had a three-point game in the Pittsburg Penguins’ 6-3 win over the St. Louis Blues. Crosby’s 1,699th point came 6 minutes and 37 seconds into the second period, to give the Pens a 3-2 lead. Crosby made an impressive pass across the ice to Parker Wotherspoon, who was able to beat Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington on the glove side during a delayed penalty. Crosby’s historic point came 42 seconds into the third period, extending the Pens lead to 4-2. Crosby passed the puck from behind the net up to Erik Karlson who was able to find Bryan Rust’s stick through traffic. After the game Crosby said, “Joining that company, those are players that I grew up idolizing, and I didn’t ever think that I’d be with them or near them (in points).” Crosby added, “It’s something I’m grateful for, that I’ve been able to play this long and be part of that group”. Crosby went on to score a goal later that period.
Crosby currently sits at 1,701 career points, which puts him in 9th place in the all-time points leader board, just 22 behind his former teammate, Mario Lemieux. If Crosby continues his current scoring rate, he is on pace to move all the way up to 5th place by the end of this season.
“He’s always looking to be better and thrive even more”, said 20-year teammate, Kris Letang. “You know (Crosby’s) reputation just from working in the league”, said Penguins Head Coach Dan Muse. “Everybody talks about just his drive and his professionalism”, Muse added.
Through 10 games this season Crosby has 7 goals and 7 assists. Crosby has the most goals and 2nd most points on the Penguins this season. Crosby is on pace for his first 100-point season since the 2018-19 season. The Penguins currently sit at third place in the NHL with a 7-2-1 record. Crosby turned 38 years old before the season started, but shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
