The Student Government Association held a student-led protest last Friday, February 13, urging Public Safety to provide an action plan in the event of ice presence on campus.

Students were joined by faculty and staff members outside the Administration Center at 12 PM last Friday, to demand an action plan on behalf of Uhart public safety in the event of ice presence on campus and increased security measures at entrance gates on campus.

When asked about changes protesters hope to see, a faculty member stated, “We’ve been asking in our faculty meetings, what is the place for ice? How do we support students? And our deans don’t have answers, our administrators don’t have answers, and now we have that public safety doesn’t have an answer.”

The demonstration was attended by some public safety officers; however, there have been no updates on action steps moving forward.  As the demonstration ended, a student leading the group told us, “Today, public safety had no comment. They didn’t want to talk to us, and they have no plan. So, as a student, that’s very unsettling, and we’re just going to continue to come together as a community because we have to protect us.”

Another staff member in attendance agreed with the student perspectives, explaining that student requests are “extremely reasonable”, and adding that it is “strange that there is no answer at this point”.

STN will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
