The 2020 NFL Draft took place on Thursday night and it made history becoming the first online draft in NFL history, due to the coronavirus. The process of the draft was a bit different this year because of the change in scenery.
The first thing that was different was that Commissioner Roger Goodell was at his home announcing all of the picks for this year’s draft. Also instead of having representatives at the draft location and bringing up the ticket with who they wanted to draft, either the Head Coach, GM, or Owner could submit the pick to the league. After the pick was submitted to the league then the next team up would be informed and the clock would start for them.
To no surprise the Cincinnati Bengals chose Joe Burrow, Quarterback from LSU with the first pick in the draft. Then followed by the Washington Redskins taking Edge rusher from Ohio State Chase Young. Picks would follow and throughout the first night there would be a total of four quarterbacks taken, which had Tua Tagovailoa to the Miami Dolphins, Justin Herbert the pick after going to the Los Angeles Chargers, and surprisingly the Green Bay Packers trading up and selecting Jordan Love.
The Green Bay Packers without a doubt had one of the worst draft weekends in the history of the NFL. With their first two picks they drafted a quarterback and a running back, which most fans would say are the two positions with their best players on their team.
At quarterback they have Super Bowl Champion and a former MVP Aaron Rodgers who still has four years left on his contract, and last season threw for 4,002 yards, 26 TD’s, and only 4 INT’s. The starting running back for the Packers last year was Aaron Jones, who led the league in rushing TD’s with 16. Also the biggest problem the Packers had last year was that Rodgers had no targets to throw to the entire season, and with such a heavy wide receiver class in this year’s draft they did not select one.
If the season starts on time or happens at all is still up in the air at this point, but this weekend sure did help sports fans to get away from the world for a little bit.
