On Tuesday, September 29, CNN aired the first of three 2020 Presidential Debates. It could only be described as chaos, with questions and answers being quickly derailed by interruptions from both candidates. At one point, Biden says to Trump, “Will you shut up, man?” and “That was a productive segment, wasn’t it? Keep yapping, man.” The interruptions became so distracting that the moderator, Chris Wallce, had to scold President Trump. Wallace said, “I believe the country would be better served if we allowed both people to speak with fewer interruptions. I’m appealing to you, sir, to do that.” Trump tried to argue that Biden had done just as much interrupting, to which Wallace replied, “Frankly, you have been doing more interrupting than he did.”
One of the topics covered throughout the debate was race, where Chris Wallace asks Trump to denounce White Supremacy and he refused. In response to Wallace’s question, President Trump said, “I’ll tell you what, somebody’s got to do something about Antifa and the left. Because this is not a right wing problem. This is a left wing problem.”
Biden made his position about defunding police clear, saying that he was totally opposed to the idea and instead supports giving police the opportunity to deal with the problems they face. He said, “They need more assistance. They need, when they show up for a 9-11 call, to someone with them who is a psychologist, a psychiatrist to keep them from having to use the force and be able to talk people down.”
With the president’s recent COVID diagnosis, it is unclear for the future of the remaining two Presidential Debates. Sen. Kamala Harris and Vice President Mike Pence are expected to move forward with their debate this Tuesday.
