Six months after former head coach John Gallagher resigned, and two months after the conclusion of the Men’s basketball season, the Hartford Hawks have found their next head coach: Aaron Toomey.
Toomey, 30, has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Division-3 Rochester University. In that time, the Yellow Jackets compiled a 34-19 record. Prior to his time at Rochester, Toomey had been an assistant coach at Vassar University and his alma mater: Amherst College.
Hired by Amherst college after his final season of college Basketball, Toomey spent four seasons as an assistant before getting the “interim coach” position with Amherst in the 2019-20 season. Inheriting a team that had gone a stellar 25-5 the year prior, Toomey maintained the status quo for the mammoths, finishing his lone season as interim coach with a record of 18-8.
Toomey comes to Hartford with an expansive knowledge of the game, and a legendary status as a player for the Amherst Mammoths. After spending four years as a player for Amherst, Toomey finished as the Mammoths all-time scoring leader, with an astounding 2,203 points.
In the 2013 season, Toomey was named the AP National Player of the Year after recording 33.5 points per game, 5.0 assists per game, and 4.8 rebounds per game. Jump forward one more season, and he was named the D3Hoops Player of the Year in 2014. His stats that season: 34.6 PPG, 5.2 REB, and 6.4 AST/G.
The decision to hire a former division 3 athlete as coach aligns with the University of Hartford’s realignment to D3. We wish Coach Toomey the best and hope to see him succeed as the Hawks Basketball Coach.
