Following the LA District Attorney’s call for the resentencing of the infamous Menendez Brothers, Erik and Lyle, it has been questioned whether the brothers would be released from prison. George Gascón, the Los Angeles District Attorney, held a press conference on October 24th to inform the world of his formal request to the court for the brothers’ resentencing.

The murders of Jose Menendez and his wife, Kitty Menendez, in August of the late 1980s stunned the world and made headlines everywhere. After being shot dead by their sons in their Beverly Hills home, the brothers were arrested in March 1990. In March 1996, they were found guilty of first-degree murder, and two months later they were given a life sentence without the possibility of release.

It was just last year that the attorneys of the Menendez brothers would ask the court for a reconsideration of the conviction, as new evidence began to emerge about the rape of “a former member of the boy band, Menudo, who was said to have been raped by Jose Menendez when he was 14” (AP News). which was intended to shed light on the brothers’ earlier allegations that they acted in self-defense against their abusive father.

The first attempt at resentencing would not result in much until a year later, when the popular Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” would premiere. At that time, fans of the brothers and the show would demand that the brothers be given a fair trial by the courts. Along with multiple family members of the brothers, holding a press conference two weeks ago on Oct. 16, pleading for the release of Erik and Lyle.

Now the attorneys are under the belief that the brothers will be released by Thanksgiving, with the brother’s lawyer, Mark Geragos saying, “I believe before Thanksgiving, they will be home” (Yahoo!). With no concrete date, all roads lead to the brothers possibly being released, with many optimistic that it will happen.
