The University of Hartford Track & Field team is trending in the right direction with a new track being built on campus.

After an already successful season, Hartford Athletics Track and Field coach Connor Green was confident in the program to continue its success in his press conference with CMM:315 Sports Journalism.

It was announced in May of 2023 that the school would be building a 400-meter eight lane track, which is now in the final stages of being complete led. This is a long-awaited addition to the University of Hartford campus, Coach Green said, “a track has been promised since the 80’s” when expressing how important this is to the program.

The idea of a new track is obviously very exciting for the university’s residential life and overall appeals to applying students, but this also is a massive improvement for the Track & Field program as a whole. Scheduling for practices has been a big issue for Hartford athletes, Coach Green said, “we previously were going off campus for the past 15 years at 6 o’clock in the morning to utilize outside facilities” which had a trend of wearing down athletes’ endurance as they keep up with schoolwork. Coach Green later said, “I would argue our setup is probably one of the nicest in New England” creating greater opportunities for development.

I asked Coach Green how he views this developmental opportunity, he said, “the recovery piece cannot be overlooked” and “sleep is where recovery occurs and having us practice so early doesn’t necessarily mean they get to change their schedules or academic demands or social demands in any way shape or form. So having the ability for them to even get a little more sleep is probably the biggest notable improvement.”

Green later spoke on specifics like roster depth, new recruiting opportunities, and his confidence that this upcoming season the average amount of records broken is going to greatly increase. His final statements emphasized his confidence in not only this year’s athlete’s ability but also attitude towards being the best version of themselves.
