With the worst record in the AL East the Toronto Blue Jays have a lot of work to regain the control of the AL East that they once had. Finishing the 2024 season with a regular season record of 74-88 the Blue Jays were unable to gain a playoff spot or beat out division rival Tampa Bay Rays for the 4 spot.
Like many teams in the 2024 season the injury bug hit early and hit hard, with star shortstop Bo Bichette getting injured in the middle of June with a calf strain the Blue Jays missed him for about a week before returning to play just to reinjure the calf, keeping him out of MLB play until early September where he would hit the injured list again with a finger fracture. Another key name for the Blue Jays last season was Alek Manoah who only pitched in 5 games all season. With the hopeful return for Manoah the Jays seem to be in a much better place injury wise compared to the previous season.
With the additions of Scherzer and Hoffman to the rotation along with bringing back Yimi Garcia the Blue Jays have on paper one of the better rotations. Last season the Blue Jays as a pitching staff had an ERA of 4.29, meaning that the team would allow 4 runs on average, this stat alone wouldn’t be so bad if the offense was out scoring teams but the offense only scored 671 runs all season while the pitching staff gave up 743 runs meaning that the pitching staff gave up 72 runs that the offense couldn’t match.
Now looking at the offense, the Blue Jays were able to add Anthony Santander who has been a thorn in the sides of all AL East pitchers in 2024, with 17 of his 44 home runs coming off AL East pitching. Not only were the Jays able to add Santander but they were also able to add Andrés Giménez to the infield, With Giménez being a proven second baseman it is hard to believe the Blue Jays will try to make him play anywhere else on the field. With the threatening duo of Dante Bichette and Andrés Giménez it is safe to say the middle infield for the Jays will be a big strength to a team that struggled to win games in 2024.
With the 2025 season right around the corner Blue Jays fans have a lot to look forward to with the new and exciting additions in Max Scherzer and Anthony Santander, the Blue Jays have gone out this past offseason to try and get the big names that they think will get them the success the team and fanbase have waited so long for.
