MLB Season Preview 11: San Francisco Giants

In an absolutely loaded NL West the Giants look to reestablish themselves as a playoff team and contender in the division after an underwhelming season in 2024.

2024 record – 80-82

Offseason Moves and Roster Outlook

San Francisco approached the offseason with a clear focus, improve offensive production and add depth to the pitching staff. The Giants lost Blake Snell to Free Agency in the offseason which was their big loss. Although they recently signed veteran Justin Verlander to a one year deal but the big move San Francisco made was bringing in Shortstop Willy Adames on a seven year deal. Adames is coming off of the best year of his career and he was an all-star with Milwaukee last season and he will be an important part of this Giants team if they want to make a playoff push.

Returning stars like Logan Webb and Camilo Doval will be central to the team’s success, while young prospects such as Marco Luciano, Kyle Harrison, and Patrick Bailey are expected to play larger roles. Veterans like Wilmer Flores and LaMonte Wade Jr. provide leadership and stability in a roster that blends experience with youth.

Pitching Concerns

Logan Webb remains the clear ace of the staff, but the Giants will need more consistency from the rest of the rotation. Health will be a major factor, as injuries plagued their starting pitching last season. The bullpen, led by Doval, should continue to be a strength, but the Giants can’t afford to lean on it too heavily if their starters struggle to go deep into games.

Offensive Issues

One of San Francisco’s biggest issues in 2024 was an inconsistent offense that often struggled in key situations. The offense should take a step forward with the development Japanese star of Jung Ho Lee and Marco Luciano, the young shortstop has long been one of the Giants’ top prospects, and 2025 could be his year to break through. If he can adjust to MLB pitching and provide a consistent bat in the lineup, it would be a massive boost for San Francisco’s offense. Not to mention if Adames is able to replicate what he did last year with the Brewers, the Giants offense should be a lot better which will be crucial in competing against high-powered teams like the Dodgers and Padres.

Season Outlook & Prediction
The Giants are in an interesting spot, they’re not in full rebuild mode, but they’re also not quite at the level of the top NL contenders. If everything clicks the rotation holds up, the offense improves, and young players take the necessary steps forward they could find themselves in the Wild Card race. However, given the strength of the division, with the Dodgers Diamondbacks, and Padres all being World Series contenders, even a solid season may not be enough for a postseason berth.

Projected Record: 79-83

The 2025 season will be a massive test of whether the Giants are ready to compete now or still a year or two away from serious contention.
