KC Current Season Recap

Leo Contento | Article Published November 13, 2025

The Kansas City Current had a historic season with a record breaking 21 wins, 65 points, 17 consecutive matches without a loss, 16 shutouts, only 13 goals against, fastest to claim the shield, and no losses at home. There were a few players with dominant and breakout seasons for the team and some moves that shook up the offense when key attacking midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo had to go on maternity leave. Lorena, their goal keeper was nominated for goalkeeper of the year. She was stellar in her first season in the league with a record 14 shutouts and only 13 goals against.

Temwa Chiwinga had another dominant season winning the golden boot for a second season in a row with 15 goals. This makes her the second person to ever win the golden boot in back to back seasons. Sam Kerr, the only other person to win consecutive golden boots won it 2017, 2018, and 2019, will Temwa be able to tie her record next year as well. Temwa also won the MVP last season and she once again got a nomination this season. Temwa’s season was another dominant one; she was undefendable when she got out in front of the defense and once again proved that she could defend her golden boot title.

The defender Izzy Rodriguez had a breakout season with a league leading 6 assists, earning herself a nomination for defender of the year. Kayla Sharples also got a nomination for defender of the year, being one of the contributing forces to KC only conceding 13 goals. Claire Hutton had another stellar season, for only being 19 she played well above her years. Falling more into the defensive midfielder position she was able to control the middle knowing where the ball was and needed to be at all times.

Debinha was another star being nominated for midfielder of the year, she scored eight goals this season aiding the offence being an essential companion to Hutton's defensive style. Bia Zaneratto had another stellar season earning a nomination for MVP. She had been dominant in the offense scoring 7 goals this season. She was able to control the box, command the offense, and step back and allow others to take the shot in the end. KC lost a key part of their offense during the summer international break.

Vanessa DiBernardo had to go on maternity leave during the break, KC made a blockbuster deal to bring 2024 number one draft pick Ally Sentnor to the Current after the break. None of this dominant season could have happened without their head coach Vlatko Andonovski. Andonovski, the former US Women's National Team head coach was nominated for coach of the year this year. His leadership led his team to one of the best NWSL seasons ever. KC fell in the first round of playoffs in a stunning loss to the eight seed NY/NJ Gotham FC but there is no doubt the season they had was something for the history books. Safe to say the Current was one of the most dominant teams in NWSL history, they finished at 21-3-2.
