Aston Martin Nightmare

Daniel Craig | Article Published March 5, 2026

Aston Martin was expected to enter the 2026 Formula 1 season as a serious title contender, but instead, the team heads into the Australian Grand Prix fighting to avoid last place. After years of heavy investment from owner Lawrence Stroll, including a new factory, top engineering hires, and a new engine partnership with Honda, expectations were high. However, preseason testing revealed major problems, with the team posting slow lap times and struggling with reliability and performance.

Much of the issue appears to stem from Honda’s new engine, which has reportedly suffered from vibration, weight, and reliability concerns. Those problems have made it difficult for Aston Martin to properly run the car at full power or accurately measure its performance compared to rivals. While legendary designer Adrian Newey has promised improvements later in the season, many in the Formula 1 paddock believe the team could be stuck playing catch-up for quite some time.

The struggles also raise questions about the future of star driver Fernando Alonso. The two-time world champion joined Aston Martin believing in the team’s long-term vision, but with his contract expiring at the end of the season and the car far from competitive, his future in Formula 1 could become one of the biggest storylines as the 2026 season unfolds.
