On Sunday, the New York Islanders relieved Patrick Roy of his duties as head coach. In his place, Islanders General Manager Mathieu Darche hired Peter DeBoer. DeBoer is signed with the Islanders on the multiyear contract through the 2028-29 season.
Patrick Roy was hired by the Islanders on January 20th, 2024. The decision was made by former General Manager, Lou Lamoriello. Since then, Roy has coached in 197 different regular season games across three seasons. In that time Roy has a record of 97-78-22. 97 wins is enough for the fourth most in Islanders franchise history. This season, the Islanders had a 42-31-5 record under Roy. The Islanders have lost their last 4 games, and have lost 7 of their last 10, now finding themselves 3 points out of a playoff spot. Roy had a long and successful NHL hall of fame career seeing him win 4 Stanley Cups, 5 William Jennings, 3 Vezinas, and 3 Conn Smythe trophies. He is considered one of the top goalies to ever play. Before coaching the Islanders, he coached the Colorado Avalanche for three seasons, where he won the Jack Adams in the 2013-14 season.
Peter DeBoer has had a long coaching career, managing 1,261 regular season games, and 179 playoff games. In the regular season, he has a record of 662-447-152. He coached the Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils, San Jose Sharks, Vegas Golden Knights, and the Dallas Stars. Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill fired DeBoer after the Stars lost in the Western Conference Finals for a third straight season.
