University Cancels all Classes until Thursday 11/1 ahead of Hurricane Sandy

From the University:

Due to anticipated severe weather caused by Hurricane Sandy, University of Hartford classes are canceled Monday, Oct. 29, through Wednesday, Oct. 31. University employees should report to work on their normal schedules on Monday, Oct. 29. University offices, the Sports Center, and libraries will be open on Monday, as well as residence halls and the Commons dining hall. University events on Saturday and Sunday will go on as scheduled. Any updates or changes will be communicated on Sunday evening, Oct. 28, via text message, email, web alert, and the message on the University’s main phone number (860.768.4100).

If power is lost in any of these non-generator buildings, students will have approximately two hours to prepare to evacuate in an orderly fashion. They will be asked to pack personal items, medications, toiletries and anything else they may need within a 48-hour period.

Once evacuation occurs, students will not be allowed back into the evacuated residence halls until power is restored. Before the residence halls can be occupied again, life safety systems in each residence hall must be checked and the fire marshal must inspect the buildings.

Evacuated students will be moved to the Sports Center which has generator power and ample bathrooms and space. Food will be available in the Commons.

In case of evacuation, the Office of Residential Life will supervise the move and fully staff the Sports Center. If evacuation occurs, the Office of Residential Life can be reached 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 860.768.7792.

In anticipation of heavy rain, student cars parked in low-lying areas of Lots C, D, E, F, and N-Lot extension (behind the baseball field) should be moved to higher locations within those lots. On Sunday evening, cars can also be moved to M lot (behind the Sports Center.)

The University will close today at 4:30, all evening classes are cancelled.

Hartt performances and President's College courses are canceled. Mortensen and Allen Libraries will be closed as of 4:30 p.m.

The 4 p.m. architecture lecture; tonight's Hillel event, Leap into Tzedakah; and this evening's screening and discussion of the documentary Jesus Camp WILL all take place as scheduled.

Breaking News: Power Restored to all campus buildings

Power was restored to the Village Apartments, Regents Park, and Park River residence halls late Sunday afternoon. Students can move back into the three residence halls beginning at 1 p.m. Monday (Nov. 7). Students may not move in before 1 p.m., as life safety systems must be checked and inspected before the buildings can be occupied.

All undergraduate classes will resume on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Graduate and English Language Institute courses will be held as scheduled on Monday. Mortensen and Allen Libraries are open regular hours. Faculty and staff are welcome to bring their children to work if necessary.

The deadline for dropping a course and receiving a grade of "W," changing to pass/no pass or from pass/no pass to a letter grade, or changing from credit to audit status has been changed to Monday, Nov. 14.

Regents Park Apartments, Park River Apartments, and the Village Apartments have all suffered a power outage.

All residents of those buildings have been issued a mandatory evacuation order. Students have been moved to the Gengras Student Union.

Sources tell STN2 that a number of transformers have blown causing the outage and that some of the fire alarms have malfunctioned and are going off.

Governor Dannel Malloy has issued a state of Emergency for the State of Connecticut.

Right now there are several thousand Connecticut residents without power. Passengers at Bradley International Airport were kept on the tarmac of a Jet Blue jet for 8 hours during the storm, and one fatality has been blamed on the storm in CT.

A 5.9 Magnitude earthquake centered in Virginia has occurred. The quake has been felt as far as Georgia, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, New York (metro), Connecticut, and Rhode Island. CT state police say they have been flooded with calls about the earthquake.

The United States Weather Service says there is no expected threat of a tsunami on the east coast.

The dept of homeland security, FAA, and pentagon have all been evacuated. All National Monuments have been closed and evacuated.

There are major Amtrak, and Acela train delays, and major traffic backups in New York and the Washington Metro Area.

The CT DOT has announced that they will be inspected all CT bridges to assure no damage from the earthquake.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for northern Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties until 5:15 p.m.

A tornado warning means that a tornado has been spotted, or that Doppler radar indicated a thunderstorm with circulation, which can produce a tornado.

According to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla, if a tornado warning is issued, get into a basement or the lowest level of your home and avoid windows. If possible, get under some sort of sturdy protection, like a workbench or heavy table, or you can cover yourself with a mattress or sleeping bag.

If you’re in a location without a basement, it is advised to get into a small center room, like a bathroom or closet, under a stairwell or in an interior hallway. Crouch as low as possible to the floor, facing down and cover your head with your hands.

A bathtub may offer some protection as well.

If you’re driving an a tornado warning is issued, park the car as quickly and safely as possible, out of traffic lanes. Get out of the vehicle and seek shelter inside a sturdy building.

If you’re not in the vicinity of a building, run to low ground away from any cars and lie as flat as possible and face down.

Avoid seeking shelter under bridges and highway overpasses.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Hartford County. The warning is in effect until January 12 at 8PM.

A winter storm warning is issued when an average of 6 or more inches of snow is expected in a 12 hour period, or for 8 or more inches in a 24 hour period. Travel will be slow at best on well treated surfaces, and quite difficult on any unploughed or untreated surfaces. Local governments also request that non essential travel not be done.
