WELFund, in association with Career Services, the Alumni Association and the Hartford Art School, hosted a seminar on Tuesday, April 15th in the Konover Great Room, where students and faculty could learn about what important information should be included on their LinkedIn profile in order to be noticed by employers.
LinkedIn is a social networking website for professional use that can be used to discover, business deals and job opportunities.
“LinkedIn is replacing the old way of hiring people. In the past you would see a job description posted, and you would send in your resume… Now what [employers] are doing is going out to LinkedIn, searching keywords associated with the job they want to fill… and then actually calling you can having you come in for an interview instead of you sending in your resume for an interview,” says Alexandra Coury, program manager for WELFund.
The seminar was hosted by Joseph Catrino, a professor of Communications at Quinnipiac University. Catrino discussed the keywords that employers are looking for and how to best leverage your network that you make on LinkedIn.
The event also gave students and faculty a chance to get professional headshots taken by photography students of the Hartford Art School.
“Having a professional headshot sets you far above people who just crop themselves out of a group photo of a party from college… It makes you look more professional, it makes you look more mature, it makes you look more presentable to people who are looking at your profile.” says Coury.
