Previewing the Champions League

The quest to become the Champions of Europe begins today.

The champion’s league is back. Europe’s most prestigious award will kick off tomorrow with the start of the group stages and the race to the round of 16. the groups are as follows,  

 

Group A 

Group A will consist of the German monster of Bayern Munich, Munich won the champions league back in 2020, and are looking to make this year their year with the signing of English striker Harry Kane. They are the favorites to finish top of the group.  

Potential runner ups, the Red Devils of Manchester United. United missed the champions league last season and are looking to make show they belong here after some hardship in the premier league, Losing back-to-back games.  

Galatasaray finished top of the table in the Turkish league last season and being the only team from the Super Lig to be featured in the tournament.  

Copenhagen is the only team from Denmark to get to the champions league for consecutive seasons. They are looking for a push to get out of the group stages this year.  

 

Group B 

Group B will start with the runners up in the Premier league, The Gunners, Arsenal. With the help of manager Mikel Arteta, a club legend, they have a strong core and are looking forward to a long campaign. This is the Gunners first time back in the Champions league since 2017.  

Next the group is Sevilla. Sevilla finished 12th in La Liga last season, but because of their huge win in the Europa league last season over Roma, they were given a spot in the Champions League. With the new addition of Sergio Ramos in the defense, they will look to get out of the Group.  

PSV finished second in the Dutch league qualifying for champions league. With players like Luuk De Jong and Sergino Dest, they have a formidable team and are ready to push far. 

Lens had a breakout season in the French League finishing second behind PSG. They may not expect a lot being in a tough group but getting a taste of champions league can be particularly good for a young talented team.  

 

Group C 

Napoli start the group off. Having a dedicated team winning the Serie A last season. The young core of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen a good run is inevitable for Napoli.  

Napoli will have to face one of the best teams in the world right now, Real Madrid. Madrid has won the champions league more than any other team. With superstar Vinicius Jr. And new addition midfielder Jude Bellingham the future is young and bright for the 2022 winners.  

Braga finished 3rd in Primeria Liga, getting a chance to play in the qualifiers which they won in to get a spot in the Champions League.  

Last in the group is Union Berlin. The team that came up from the Bundesliga second division, finishing 4th and getting in the champions league for the first time. A miracle season hoping to make a good run in the tournament, with no real expectations other than win. 

 

Group D 

This group starts off with the runners up in the Champions league last year, Inter Milan. They lost their star goalkeeper Onana to Manchester United. But have an excessively big and powerful team led by manager Simone Inzaghi, Italian legend. 

Next in the group are the winners of the primiera Liga Benfica. Benfica was able to get their boy hood superstar Angel Di Maria who has been lighting it up for them this season with 4 goals and 1 assist in 5 games.  

A team that kills in the Austrian Bundesliga every year, RB Salzburg. They are looking to get out of the group stages and make a big underdog story this year.  

The last team to round off the group is Real Sociedad. They finished 4th in La Liga last season. They are looking to be the dark horse in this tough group.  

 

Group E 

Atletico Madrid will be the favorites to win the group after finishing 3rd in la Liga. Players like Memphis Depay and Antione Griezmann will look to provide notion that they are dangerous and a force.  

Lazio are in the group from Italy, and they are looking to get out of the group with Madrid. They finished second in Serie A, letting everyone know they are here to play. 

Feyenoord finished 1st in the Dutch league, looking to outshine PSV as the best Dutch team in the Tournament.  

Celtic is the last in the group and has not had much success in the Champions League. They will hope to get out of the Group.  

 

Group F 

We get to the death Group. There is one every year and this one is quite that.  

We start with the Winners in the French league, PSG. Considered the best player in the world, Kylian Mbappe, the 24-year-old captain will look to get the one trophy he has been chasing for years. But it will not be easy.  

Falling the French champions is the red side of Milan. AC Milan led by forward Rafeal Leao, and new signing, American Christian Pulisic. They have been strong in Italy so far, but this is a death group, and anything can happen. 

The next big team in the group is Borussia Dortmund. The black and yellow had a heartbreaking end to the season losing the Bundesliga on goal difference to Bayern Munich. Led by Marco Reus, they will try to get out of the group at all costs.  

Lastly is the team making all the right moves in England, Newcastle United. They are in the champions league for the first time since 2003.  

 

Group G  

Group G starts with the Champions League winners last year, Manchester City. One of the most dominant players in all of football, Erling Haaland, will look to make it 2 in 2 years with a pretty easy group. Captain Kevin De Bruyne will miss the Group stages following an injury, but the city midfield is still one of the best cores in the world.  

Next in the group is the 3rd place winners in the Bundesliga RB Leipzig. They have a particularly good squad that knows how to play with each other and will most likely follow City out of the Group Stages.  

Young Boys are in this group as well. They made their champions league presence known last season beating Manchester United in the group stages, but not having a big campaign. They will look to make a bigger jump this year in a tough challenging group.  

Last in the group is Serbian league winners Crvena Zvezda. Being in this competition will be a challenge but that is a good thing for a team to make these kinds of appearances.  

 

Group H  

The last group will begin with the La Liga winner of last season, Barcelona. They have had a cold spell in the champions league and are looking to make a statement with striker Robert Lewandowski, and midfielders Gavi and Pedri.  

Next in the group is the runners up in the primeria Liga Porto. They have been very well this season with players like pepe, and Nico Gonzalez. Their foundation is strong, but will they be able to get through the group stage? We will see soon.  

shakhtar Donetsk will look to prove themselves too with their domination in the Ukrainian league year in and year out.  

Antwerp won their spot in the Champions league winning the championship qualifiers in Belgium. They are not the biggest nor strongest but looking to show they belong as an underdog.  

 

That wraps up the groups. The Group Stages will start Tuesday the 19th of September as AC Milan goes head-to-head with Newcastle united. The biggest and best in Europe will all go for glory, but one will come out on top. The favorites are the winner’s last season Manchester City. There will be questions answered and teams heartbroken, but this is the beautiful game.
