Alex Ovechkin Closing in Goal Record, Only 11 Away

On Saturday Alex Ovechkin stayed hot scoring the Capitals only goal in their 3-1 loss to the Lightning. He is now just eleven goals away from 895 career goals and passing Wayne Gretzky for the goals record. With the Capitals having 22 games left this season, the nine-time rocket Richard winner has to average .5 goals per game to set the record. So far this season the 39-year-old has averaged .705 goals per game. If he continues that pace and stays healthy, he will break the goal record on April 4th against the Chicago Blackhawks which is 16 games from now. Ovechkin has been very good as of late, scoring 9 goals in his last 10 games. On the season in 44 games played he has 31 goals and 17 assists for 48 points. In his career he has 884 goals and 714 assists for 1598 points in 1470 games played. The Capitals are currently 38-14-8 which is good enough for first place in the Eastern Conference and second place in the NHL.
