Facebook and Your Career

You would be hard pressed to find someone at any college in the country these days who does not have a Facebook profile. But could the content you post on your profile affect your chances of getting a job? Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites in the country especially on college campuses. Yet how cautious are students about the content they post on there face book page?
One student said “ yea I am very cautious with that topic because when it’s on face book anyone can see it and there just some stuff that people shouldn’t being seeing or shouldn’t be posted, a lot of friends of mine I see put stuff up on Facebook that’s just crazy and they should probably keep that stuff just private.”
Another student notes,“There are some pretty funny pictures of me on face book though but I’m not worried about who’s going to see that especially like employers or anything like that.”

While the students we talked to were pretty divided on whether they saw the need to be cautious with the content they posted on Facebook, Tom Feazell of career services says it is important to be careful what you put on your profile because it just might cost you being hired for a job.

“A lot of companies especially when your looking in traditional industries, sort of look for that model citizen who’s not going to get into trouble outside of work, who might put a bad name on the company. So if you have pictures of yourself out partying on campus or off campus. And aren’t so positive in there nature it can play an effect in your hiring process.” Said Feazell.
He also says a good rule of thumb when it comes to what you post on face book, is if you wouldn’t want your grandparents to see it don’t post it. If there is an unflattering picture of you online ask the person who posted to take it down, and if you really want to post that information consider using an alias.
