Men's American Olympic Hockey Team Beats Sweden in Overtime to Advance to Metal Round

The men's US hockey team beat Sweden 2-1 in overtime in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday. Quinn Hughes scored the winning goal three minutes and 27 seconds into overtime. Hughes beat Swedish netminder Filip Gustavsson glove side from between the two face off dots. Matthew Boldy and Auston Matthews assisted on the goal. Hughes described scoring the overtime winner as a “relief.” 

Dylan Larkin opened the scoring just over 11 minutes into the second period. Larkin deflected Jack Hughes’ shot off the faceoff. Both Hughes brothers were credited with the assists. The game remained 1-0 until Mikko Zibanejad scored, tying the game with 89 seconds remaining in regulation. The Rangers star forward scored on a one-timer from the left faceoff dot off a beautiful across zone pass from Lucas Raymond. Lucas Raymond and Gabriel Landeskog assisted on the goal. The Americans outshot Sweden 40-29. Despite losing the game, Filip Gustavsson was incredible in net making 38 saves and coming up big several times throughout the game. Connor Hellebuyck was also solid in net making 28 saves and just allowing the one goal at the end of regulation. 

Team Slovakia beat Germany 6-2 on Wednesday. The Americans are scheduled to play them at 3:10pm et on Friday. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Canada Finland game in the gold medal match.
