The University will be welcoming three new Greek organizations as members of the school’s Greek Life, with the hopes of enhancing and advancing the school’s sense of diversity and multiculturalism.

According to the Office of Greek Life, the three organizations, including the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority, Phi Iota Alpha fraternity, and the co-ed Theta Delta Sigma group, have been invited to campus to recruit new members and expand their organizations as thriving members of Greek Life.

“We just want students to enjoy themselves here, find who they are as people, and then find those groups of people that remind them of their friends from home,” says Kevin Ruiz, Greek Life advisor for fraternity life.

Currently, 11% of students are members of the six sororities and eight fraternities recognized by Hartford’s Greek Life. With these three new groups, the University now opens up opportunities for international students and students of different ethnicities to embrace their heritage and join Greek Life.

Ruiz says the first step before these groups are brought into Greek Life is to create a governing body to oversee things, such as recruitment processes, conduct issues, and philanthropy.

This body would act similarly to the Intrafraternity Council, also known as IFC, and the Panhellenic Council, also known as Panhel, electing their own Executive Board and giving students a chance to grow in a professional manner.

“We feel we are a very different type of organization,” says Jamel Catoe, the National Vice President for Marketing and Membership for Theta Delta Sigma. “Our organizations represents over 70 different cultures, and so we’re looking for people who are interested in multiculturalism, inclusion, diversity, and being an advocate for those types of things.”
