There were emails sent out to various people, the community and staff members. It was a fishing scheme directing staff members to go to a website which looked like the self-service website prompting them to change their password.
There was an investigation hosted by the OTS department as well as public safety. OTS’s identify the problem and flag the emails. However, there are still emails that will spill through.
The university would like people to be cautious of what kind of information they are putting out there, what websites they are visiting, as well as links that they are clicking.
They do have a software in place to try to prevent these forms of spam. OTS is constantly monitoring the flow of emails that is going through along with policies in place that prevent payroll to be paid to the wrong people.
The university is unaware who was behind the scheme that would have the ability to get into their payroll accounts and change some of their direct deposit information.
